September 16 is a Mexico Independence national holiday and the most significant public holiday: Independence Day and Hidalgo´s Cry at 11 pm on September 15 of 1810.
Miguel Hidalgo a Catholic priest from Dolores in the state of Guanajuato, he rang the bell of the church to gather his parishioners. In his speech, he motivated people to stand up against the Spanish ruling. The revolt that started, lasted for 11 years until Spain acknowledged Mexico’s independence (El Grito de Dolores).
The Mexican President repeats and shouts the names of the most important heroes of the War of Independence and ends by shouting 3 times Viva México! The crowd shouts back each time: Viva!
Then the President rings the bell again and waves the Mexican flag. And the fireworks start. Ceremonies happen in every city and town at the local zócalo all over Mexico, and in Mexican embassies around the world.
Celebrate like a Mexican
Mexico’s Independence Day in Playa del Carmen is very fun and takes place at the park in front of Playa del Carmen’s City Hall where commemorates El Grito. Expect a huge crowd! Be part of it and feel more Mexican than ever. (On Avenue 15 Between Streets 8 and 10)
